We Want Clean Steel for Real

Tata Steel Nederland is the largest industrial emitter in the Netherlands. This needs to change. But the EUR 2 billion aid proposed by the Dutch state is not the solution. The current proposal overstates its climate benefits, relies on outdated or incomplete assumptions, and fails to ensure genuine transformation. We campaign against this proposal: because public money must support clean steel for real.

Our objections

High risk of fossil lock-in

The health measures do not go beyond existing legal obligations

Tata Steel may be a company in financial difficulty

Responsible for 7% of Dutch greenhouse gas emissions

Tata Steel Nederland is the largest industrial emitter in the Netherlands. For years, its activities have also caused serious health and environmental harm in the IJmond region.

€2 billion of public money at stake

The Dutch State intends to support Tata Steel’s transition with a proposed EUR 2 billion State aid package. Public investment can play an important role in industrial decarbonisation, but only if it delivers genuine climate and health benefits.
